Unraveling Threads: Is Meta's New Venture Worth the Hype?

In the tumultuous world of social media, Threads by Meta made a loud entrance in July 2023. Many of us at HausCo noticed the positive tone on the platform and we were pleasantly surprised by the easy user interface. Poised as an alternative to platforms like Twitter, Threads carved a niche by integrating with Instagram. This integration, while simplifying user onboarding, played a pivotal role in its swift user acquisition.

Within the first 24 hours, Threads attracted a staggering 30 million users. The platform quickly scaled to 100 million users in its inaugural week, showcasing its initial allure. Despite these impressive numbers, the platform's sustainability and long-term prospects remain uncertain.

Threads' Unique Selling Proposition

Threads' main draw is its seamless integration with Instagram and similarities to Twitter, offering users a familiar environment where they easily connect with their existing social network. The platform allows users to craft 500-character posts and supplement them with visuals. However, beyond its features, Threads emphasizes close-knit conversations over public discourse.

While Threads has a unified feed blending trending content with familiar posts, its real test lies in user retention and consistent engagement. Meta's future plans for Threads include introducing a 'following feed', an edit button, a reverse-chronological feed, and improved search functionality.

Threads vs. Twitter: A Misplaced Comparison?

Drawing parallels between Threads and Twitter is tempting. However, they target different user experiences. Threads initially adopted a mobile-centric approach, distancing itself from Twitter's broader access points, but with the recent introduction of its desktop version, Threads is expanding its reach. And while Twitter remains abuzz with global news and politics, Threads seems to focus on personal interactions, resembling a text-focused Instagram. But is this enough to sustain its momentum?

Despite the turmoil and controversy surrounding Twitter (I guess we’re really calling it X now?), Threads' meteoric rise was soon met with a sobering reality. By July's end, daily active users dwindled to just 8 million, marking an alarming 82% decline from its 44 million peak. This sharp downturn has brands and advertisers second-guessing its viability as a result of Meta’s struggles with user retention.

While Meta's leadership acknowledges these challenges, their optimism might be misplaced. Although Threads is making efforts to enhance its platform, such as the recent addition of a desktop version that has boosted its daily active user count, its overall growth trajectory remains a concern. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri’s mention of adding “obvious missing features” suggests that there may have been early missteps in launching the platform, especially when considering the gap left in the market by Twitter/X’s decline.

A Cautionary Tale for Brands

Threads' dwindling engagement sends a clear message to brands and advertisers: tread carefully. The platform's value for advertising is intrinsically linked to its user activity. With declining numbers and engagement, Threads' potential as an advertising goldmine seems questionable. Not long ago, Meta had stated that they wouldn’t begin to roll out more integrated advertising capabilities to brands and users until their user base reached a critical mass, which, as time goes on, seems like a smaller and smaller chance that we’ll ever get to see it come to fruition.

For brands seeking to diversify their social media presence, Threads presents a unique opportunity. With its integration with Instagram and a wide range of user-focused features on the horizon, Threads has the potential to become a hub for authentic community interaction. However, it’s not just about utilizing a new platform, but understanding its unique dynamics. Brands must not only assess how Threads aligns and contributes to their communication objectives and audience, but also pay attention to the evolving needs and interests of the Threads community. Community and social media managers, in particular, play a pivotal role here. As they engage with audiences on Threads, their insights can guide content creation — ensuring it not only resonates with the platform’s tone but also remains authentic to your brand's own voice. So, to brands ready to take the leap, Threads really does leave a lot to unravel. Our advice? Navigate Threads with a flexible, strategic approach, and keep a pulse on what the audience wants and finds valuable. As Threads evolves, balance your brand's authenticity with the ever-changing rhythm of its community.
